A little history
I have spent the past 25 years in the senior newspaper industry, first as a sales manager and then owner/publisher of my own publication. Over the years I have noticed that little has been done, at least in the U.S., to take older people out of the margins and into mainstream culture. However, publishing a newspaper specifically for them helps to that end.
Consequently, I as a senior, have noticed the impact of this marginalization. For example, a few years ago when we found that sales revenues for our newspaper were shrinking (as they have been for just about every non-digital publication) I went on a job interview to seek a position for which I was fully qualified. The interview went well and I made it clear that I was the person for the job. Four people interviewed me. Yet, I never heard from any of them again. Not even a “thank you for coming in” call.
So, that’s when it became clear that older people need to become creative in the realm of job searching, starting a business and other income-producing ventures.
What do I mean by older people?
If advertising, movies, and television were your only connection with the world, you would think that everyone was under 40. That is because people any older than that are often not represented and if they are, it is likely in a negative light. So, does this mean society considers people over 40 older?” What 40 year old thinks of themselves as old? Maybe the older people label kicks in at around 50? 60? 70? I suppose it all depends on the mindset of that person and where they are in life’s journey. So, you will likely know for yourself if you fall into this “older people” category.
